How to talk to your son about bullying: (Getting your son to talk)

Choose your words and timing

Be careful with your words… Avoid ridicule and shame… Criticise his actions, but don’t label his character badly… Or he will withdraw from you.  There’s no point in trying to use techniques to get to speak to when your own lack of self-control and nastiness is driving him from you.

Get him busy… He is more likely to talk shoulder to shoulder than face-to-face – in the car, going for a walk etc.

Ask factual questions initially

ask open-ended questions without passing judgement on his responses. Most boys want to deal with facts before they deal with emotions.  Great questions to ask include:

  • what happened next?
  • Then what happened?
  • Why did that happen?
  • What did other people do?
